What is the message of the movie Devotion? ›

This movie is about war and love. It is about struggle and victory. And above all else, it is above racism and brotherhood. And the latter doesn't only come from same coloured brothers, but from two wingmans that are black and white.

Devotion was a colossal failure because it was produced on a budget of $90 million and Sony spent $40 million on Prints and Ads. The studio incurred additional costs including $3 million in residuals, $9 million in video costs, and $16.2 million in interest and overhead.

Devotion is a 2022 American biographical war film based on the 2015 book Devotion: An Epic Story of Heroism, Friendship, and Sacrifice by Adam Makos, which tells the comradeship between naval officers Jesse L. Brown and Tom Hudner during the Korean War.

Devotion is based on the true story of the U.S. Navy's first Black pilot, Jesse Brown, and his wingman, Tom Hudner. The film closely follows their experiences during the Korean War, including Jesse's tragic death and Tom's efforts to save him.

The pair were colleagues until Brown's tragic death, and Hudner even got over his devotion to the rules to try and save his friend. While the Devotion ending saw Jesse Brown die, the memory of his bond with Hudner lives on today.

Devotion Concludes With Jesse's Heartbreaking Death

However, the firefight results in Jesse's plane leaking fuel and having to crash behind enemy lines so he could hopefully slip out. Sadly, Jesse gets stuck, which results in Tom breaking orders, downing his plane and trying to free his best friend.

The centerpiece of the controversy is a small talisman in the game (now removed, and claimed by the developers to have been placeholder art), with text reading, roughly translated, "Winnie the Pooh Xi Jinping Moron," referencing a meme connecting the cartoon bear with China's president, Xi Jinping.

The final scenes of "Devotion" show Hudner receiving the Medal of Honor for his rescue attempt. In their final conversation together, Hudner tells Daisy Brown that he feels guilty he wasn't able to save her husband or even bring back his body — a regret that we learn will stay with him for the rest of his life.

Devotion's Jesse Brown Dies in the Cold

Devotion concludes with Brown crashing into the snowy North Korean landscape and getting pinned down in his seat. His commanding officer, Tom Hudner, and a Marine chopper arrive to help him out, but sadly, they can't free him.

Although Hudner had not asked for permission, he crash-landed his own plane near Brown's to try to save him. Brown's leg was pinned by the wreckage of the plane, and the angle at which his plane had come to rest made the co*ckpit difficult to reach from the ground.

The movie contains some overt Christian content, including prayer and a Christian character who wears a cross. Despite this, DEVOTION could have used more Christian faith since the true story is based on two men of great faith. Also, the movie has about 30 obscenities and profanities in it and some war violence.

The film ends with a note that Brown's remains have never been recovered from North Korea, and that Hudner and Brown's families remain close friends to this day.

Hudner says Brown's last words were for her, “just tell Daisy I love her.” Hudner apologizes for not saving him. Daisy says that wasn't his job.
