    Chocolate Idli Cake

One day i was lying in bed watching TV (which doesn't happen often), I came across the new pillsbury's commercial. The recipe is a chocolate idli cake. Suddenly the idea struck me, i wanted to create a steamed chocolate idli cake recipe on my own.

The very next day i was in the kitchen experimenting the recipe. And guess what my first attempt itself is a huge success.

    What are Idli Cakes?

Cake batter which is steamed in idli plates instead of cake pans. Regular cake batter can be used for this recipe. But for a change, I used a combination of sooji and flour batter which creates a nice texture to the cake.

The cake is perfect after school snacks for kids or an instant recipe to satisfy sweet cravings.

Idli cakes are best served with some chocolate syrup or ice cream.

The cake took less than 15 mins to make from start to finish and i was so happy to see the super spongy cake. This recipe is such a keeper, great for your sudden chocolate cake craving. It is great for people who don't have an oven, it can be made in a idli steamer or any bowl.

How to Make Steamed Idli Cakes

    • Take yogurt, sugar in a bowl and whisk till creamy and sugar is melted.
    • Now add in oil and vanilla and whisk well.
    • Add in sooji, cocoa and mix well. Set aside for 5 mins.
    • Now add in water and mix well.
    • Add in baking soda and mix well.
    • Add in flour and fold gently.
    • Now spoon this in a well greased idli plate and steam for 5 to 7 mins. Insert a toothpick to check whether the cake is done.
    • Now remove and let it cool for a min.
    • Use a spoon to remove it and serve

Hope you will give this a try and let me know how it turns out for you.

No curd has to be used. You can use melted butter instead of oil

      Hello,

Instead if rava/semolina do we have any gluten free option? Also can we use jaggery instead of sugar?

      Hi Aarthi,

If we use normal stainless steel bowl and make this in cake shape, do we need to cover the bowl with plate while steaming?

      Thanks

This came out very well.infact if am not wrong...even better than the Pillsbury one !
It was soft and spongy and really yummy.
The only thing is you have mentioned above that you are coming out with the wheat flour version with jaggery I hope. I have not been able to find that in the net.
Do paste a link here if you have already updated the recipe on your blog. If not ...I will wait and see.am a bit apprehensive to try out wheat coz it will be more dense.

      Hi Aarati

Thank you for this amazing recipe.
Tried it today for my daugther's Tiffin.
Turned out very well, better than the readymade mix ones.
Am sure the Tiffin box will come back empty. 😉
